31.08.17 There was a lot of discussion about love and hate. R told a story about the Tesco on Cainscross road where (it turns out she had read a newspaper article) about someone being attacked outside it and the shop manager running out to defend him. she said it was a place she didn't like as a result. She also talked about 'The Dump' an area she had to walk past when she was younger on the way to school and didn't like it - adults told her to avoid it. But she didn't really know of any bad thing that had happened there.
21.09.17 Due to meet with the group again today. So far H is the only one to have confirmed... and she cannot come until 5.30. the others haven't contacted me to say they can't make it, so am hoping they will turn up. C also coming from Bristol to help facilitate - difficult to know, but think it's best to get down there and see what happens.
31.08.17 We talked about moving ...- a few miles away, but in reality a long way without access to transport. He said 'it's complicated, but my parents decided it was better to move there.' ...he talked a lot about the Sainsbury's in Dudbridge as being architecturally very nice, but it was also somewhere he could walk to ... with his friend. He talked about where he lives now as being 'not awful', but he didn't have much control over where he is living now and missed being able to get into Stroud... I asked him about the lack of control about these type of decisions and he said 'yeah, I don't have control'.
03.08.17 The feeling in the room was quiet - perhaps they were a bit overwhelmed by all my talking, but when I asked if they wanted to do it, most nodded. They seemed to enjoy the introductions exercise. It's a lot to take in. Am I asking them to do too much? It's also reliant on them being motivated. I asked them to think about taking us all on a walk with Go Pro's (technology clearly is an incentive for some).
21.09.17 I might need to write a chapter called 'interviews are rubbish'...I asked her about her run along the towpath and she was totally bewildered why I would ask her about that - or what she felt about the bridge etc as she walked through it. She didn't understand what I was driving at I guess. She said it was about making conversation.
31.08.17 We returned to the council offices and I realised (or had done so quite quickly when talking about the walk and during it)., that because this group are scattered that for the walk to pick out places for them that are personal we'd have had to walk around the broader area of at least 10 miles! My assumptions about the nearness of locality for them, perhaps skewed by studies I've read which focus on urban walks, where young people involved all go to the same schools and live within a very small area have a very different kind of reach...We spent about 90 mins walking and only on the last strait before we reached the offices did L complain she was tired. They are all used to walking distances.
